Initially his workshop was in Cirencester where, as founder members, he worked in partnership with Jennifer Whitehouse, producing high fired, slip decorated pieces which built on the British earthenware traditions and used images of landscapes, birds and plants. Their work was sold mainly through The Casson Gallery, Oxford Gallery and The Guild of Gloucestershire Craftsmen.

After a period as Head of Art at Rendcomb College where he worked alongside Tom Denny and Sophie Blackwell to build up a highly successful department, Martin taught life drawing and History of Art on the Gloucester College of Art Foundation and HND courses before taking posts teaching English Literature in Greece, Switzerland and France.

A return to the UK saw him fire up his kilns again. He now combines his ceramics with printmaking, painting and writing for West England Bylines. He is director of the Odda's Chapel bi-annual Art Exhibition.
