Susanne Highfield

BRITISH CERAMICIST

Around 15 years ago Susanne Highfield returned to clay for the first time since university. It was here that she first discovered clay in a more formal setting and discovered a love for its tactile nature and versatility as a medium of expression. Two years ago she started throwing at the wheel and began tutelage under renowned ceramicist Mirka Golden-Hann at Messums West.

The versatility of clay has allowed Highfield to explore different concepts and ideas. Working with a fine off-white clay even for her Raku fired work, preferring the smooth finish to the traditional choice of Raku clay that holds more grog, which offers more stability during the very physical firing process. This choice is more challenging but the smoothness of the finish is as important to her.

When Highfield returned to clay she began what is now known as the ‘Crack’ Series. Taking clay impressions from the built environment, the cracks in the pavements or buildings around her. The series gave Highfield the opportunity to imbue the process with symbolism during the firing process when the cracks are filled; similar to the Japanese art of Kintsugi.

However it has been her return to the wheel that has seen the most development. Highfield’s Ring Series begin life on the wheel. The hollow rings are thrown, and different glazing techniques are explored. From Raku to a smooth white finish. The conceptual development surrounding the development of these interlinked rings is the interwoven human connections of our lives. Sets of Rings are designed to sit with other sets to make larger groups, ‘much as family or friends groups’ do in our lives.

‘My recent collection is all about the exploration of interconnecting rings and creating tactile maneuverable pieces. Sculptural pieces that can be changed and interacted with to endless possibilities.’
